Ambassador Agostinho Van-Dúnem Strengthens Diplomatic Engagement with Canada

October 20, 2026

As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen diplomatic relations and cooperation between Angola and Canada, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Angola to the United States of America and Non-Resident Ambassador to Canada, Agostinho Van-Dúnem, paid a working visit to Ottawa, where he held meetings with Cheryl Urban, Assistant Deputy Minister responsible for Africa, and Sébastien Carrière, Chief of Protocol of Canada. The meetings provided an opportunity to review the current state of bilateral relations, assess prospects for deepening political and institutional dialogue, and identify priority areas for developing more dynamic and mutually beneficial cooperation. The visit took place against the backdrop of the growing strategic importance of relations between Angola and Canada, recently reinforced by a meeting between His Excellency João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, President of the Republic of Angola, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, held in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2026. Following this high-level meeting, the Ambassador's visit to Ottawa was primarily aimed at advancing the priorities established by the two leaders, with a view to translating closer political ties into concrete cooperation initiatives and strengthening bilateral dialogue mechanisms. Priority areas discussed included expanding economic and trade relations, promoting investment, cooperation in strategic and critical minerals, infrastructure development, energy, human capacity building, and the exchange of knowledge and technology. The meetings also acknowledged the importance of exploring new opportunities for cooperation in defence and security, as well as fostering business and institutional partnerships capable of contributing to Angola's economic diversification and sustainable development. Both sides further reaffirmed their shared interest in maintaining more regular institutional engagement and promoting initiatives that encourage greater participation by the public and private sectors of both countries in pursuing the opportunities identified. The visit thus forms part of ongoing efforts to consolidate a new chapter in relations between Angola and Canada, grounded in political dialogue, shared strategic interests, and the pursuit of economic and institutional cooperation opportunities. The Embassy of the Republic of Angola reaffirms its commitment to continuing to work closely with Canadian authorities to strengthen a solid, lasting, and results-oriented partnership for the mutual benefit of both countries and their peoples.
