US Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan on Monday reaffirmed the readiness of the United States to help Angola in the process of repatriating capital illegally transferred abroad.
Speaking
to journalists after a meeting with the President of the Republic, João
Lourenço, John Sullivan said that the materialization of this intention depends
on the signing of an agreement in the field of justice.
In Angola since last Saturday, the diplomat stressed that the
agreement will be aligned with the anti-corruption strategy, one of the main
“flags” of the mandate of President João Lourenço.
“It is premature to say what will be done,”
underscored the assistant secretary of state, noting that the Justice
Department “will work to help Angola in this effort.”
Regarding the meeting with the Angolan Head of State, he said
that he focused on deepening economic relations, including the existing
strategic partnership.
Angola and the United States have a strategic partnership in
areas such as education, health, security and trade.
Trade
between the two countries reached USD 3.4 billion at the end of 2017, with
Angola exporting products valued at USD 2.6 billion and the United States about
USD 800 million.
Prior to Angola, the US official was in South Africa where he discussed with the local authorities the promotion of trade, US investments, as well as issues related to peace and security.
